April is national Heartworm awareness month!!!
Heartworms can be known as the silent killers. Your pet may never show any signs of being Heartworm positive until it is too late.
Heartworms are transmitted from Mosquitoes. Once a Mosquito bites your pet and transfers the baby Microfilaria it could take from 6-12 months for it to show positive on a blood test. Heartworms are fatal if not treated. Heartworms can be prevented simply by giving a Heartworm prevention once monthly. The prevention comes in either a chewable tablet form or a topical that can be place in between the shoulder blades. In the long run it is less expensive to keep your pet on a Heartworm prevention than it is to treat for Heartworms.
